Rooted in Why: The Work Beneath the Work

School leadership is one of the most meaningful callings, and one of the most demanding.
I decided to write this short series to create space for school leaders to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the why behind their work. Not the job description. Not the title. The calling.
Too often, leaders are recognized for how much they carry, but not supported in staying whole while carrying it. This series is an invitation to rethink that narrative.
“Rooted in Why” is not about doing more. It’s about leading with clarity, intention, and joy.
This space is for leaders who:
Feel the weight of being “on” all the time
Want to reconnect to their purpose
Believe joy is essential, not optional, in leadership
Are ready to lead in a way that is sustainable, human, and aligned

I didn’t begin my journey in education chasing titles or positions.
I entered this profession because I believed, deeply, in kids, in possibility, and in schools as places where lives could change.
Over the years, my path led me from classroom conversations to district leadership, state leadership, and national leadership. I’ve served as a high school principal, state association president, and national board member. I’ve testified, spoken, advocated, and led at multiple levels.
I’ve had the opportunity to share this work with school leaders through keynotes and small group conversations. While I’m still early in the journey, it has already been a meaningful one, building both respect for the profession and a deeper understanding of leadership. Even early on, it has been humbling and affirming in equal measure.
And still, the leadership lessons that have stayed with me the most didn’t come from a title or a role, they came from reflection.
From learning that:
You can be effective and exhausted at the same time
You can be respected and still feel disconnected
You can love the work and still need space to heal
I’ve spoken openly on podcasts, panels, and stages about leadership fatigue, purpose, joy, and the responsibility leaders have, not just to serve others, but to protect their own humanity.
This series is an extension of that journey.
Not as an expert with answers, but as a leader committed to asking better questions.
